I recently spoke to someone I know from high school whose daughter experienced a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) several years ago and has been experiencing several cognitive and emotional repercussions ever since. Unfortunately, the family and teachers haven't quite been able to pin point the true nature of her difficulties and the root cause-are they from the TBI or did they exist beforehand? This mom told be that despite her daughter having this accident several years ago, she only just learned about neuropsychologists, neuropsychological assessments, and IEP & 504 plans. This got me thinking...we as professionals assume people know about and understand the services we are offering-wait, let's take a step back, we assume they even know we EXIST! But, if parents and (possibly) other professionals, don't even know about us and our profession, how can we expect them to understand what we do or what expertise we have to offer? The truth is we can't, and so I hope this will be a mechanism through which we can disseminate accurate and up-to-date information to parents, families and professionals about all things neuropsychology and beyond.
